What Are the Benefits of Fluoride Dental Treatment?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. This mineral prevents cavities and build strength in the teeth. Dentists use fluoride to ensure that their patients have strong tooth enamel. Tooth enamel is the outside coating of the tooth that protects the core of a tooth from feeling pain and experiencing decay.

What Happens During Fluoride Treatments?
Dr. Gogniev at GT Dental in Toronto may apply fluoride to a person’s teeth in several ways. The doctor might use gel and trays, or he might swab the fluoride treatment directly on your teeth. The treatment is completely painless. The only special instruction you will have to follow after a fluoride application is to avoid eating and drinking for about 30 minutes after the application occurs. This time period allows your teeth to fully absorb the fluoride and get the most benefit from the treatment.

Is Fluoride Safe for Children?
As long as your child doesn’t swallow fluoride, it remains perfectly safe to use. Children also get fluoride from several other sources, such as:
• Fluoridated and bottled drinking water
• Some brands of toothpaste
• Prescription supplements
• Some teas and soft drinks
It is recommended that children from six months old to the age of sixteen receive some type of fluoride every day to prevent cavities in their teeth.

At GT Dental, Dr. Gogniev can examine your teeth or those of your child and after an examination, the doctor will recommend whether you need additional fluoride treatments or not. Your child might need additional fluoride, especially if they drink lots of bottled water without fluoride. Contact us for more information about whether you and your child need fluoride treatment.
