Periodontal surgery is necessary when the tissue around your teeth, gums and/or jawbone is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with a non-surgical treatment. Local anesthetic is used to keep the patient from feeling pain during this treatment. Basically, the procedure involves folding the gum away from the tooth far enough so that the root is visible. Once visible, the deep bacterial crust on the tooth can be removed with specially designed tools and the root surfaces can be made once again. The gum will naturally reattach itself to the teeth. The procedure itself is fairly quick and can be done with one visit to the office.
